There are currently three major paradigms regarding the history of human civilization. The general 'academic' interpretation of prehistory is that we all 'evolved' from nomadic hunter-gatherers who began to settle down into a more pastoral, and sedentary, way of life only 10,000 to 12,000 years ago during what they term the 'Neolithic Revolution'. This is the time when academic archaeologists tell us that humankind started experimenting with agriculture and the domestication of certain animals for food.

But this academic viewpoint is at a loss to explain the incredible achievemnts of ancient peoples who built such monmuments as Stonehenge, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the enigmatic 2,000-year-old gear-wheeled device known as the "Antikythera Mechanism", which has been shown as capable of "calculating lunar, solar and planetary movements" as viewed from the surface of the Earth.

Over the past 50 years or so another paradigm has emerged. It's advocates claim to be able to 'explain' the numerous archaeological anomalies that have perplexed the academics simply by introducing the idea that the Earth was visited by 'Alien People', whose advanced technologies were taught to certain populations in various areas of the world. In Egypt, where the academics tend to studiously ignore the evidence of 'advanced' geometry, mathemetics and geodetic metrology, this paradigm attributes these achievements to 'extra-terrestrial intervention' by advanced beings from a variety of planets and star systems.

The same interpretation is put on many ancient sites all over South America such as the enigmatic "Nazca Lines and Geoglyphs" in Peru; the megalithic structures at Tiwanaku in Bolivia, and the remains of the Mayan, Toltec and Olmec civilizations of Central America.

However, over the same period during the last 50 years or so another, more inter-disciplinary, paradigm has emerged from a combination of open-minded re-reading of ancient texts, and modern research into the history of the solar system - our resilient planet's local environment.

The picture that is emerging from these studies is one that is not conditioned by the fanciful interpretations of 19th and early 20th century antiquarians, archaeologists and adventurers; nor beholden to the euro-centric nonsense that emerged from the great European colonial empire-builing ventures that occurred over the past 600 years, and which protrayed all the peoples they encountered on all continents as 'primitive pagan barbarians' in dire need of convertion to christianity, and whose cultures were decimated, and deliberately, wiped out in order to further those ends, and please the Vatican, and the merchant classes of Paris, Madrid, Lisbon and London.

Plato, and many other classical writers, held the view that civilizations are just as 'cyclic' in nature as everything else in the natural world around us - whether in the life-cycles of plants and animals, or the cyclic nature of the movements of the sun, the moon, the planets and stars. A quick look at the moon on any clear night will show its pock-marked surface to be the result of countless impacts by meteorites, asteroids and cometary fragments over a considerably long time, indicating how dynamic our area of the inner solar has been.

Scientists have discovered over 170 confirmed "impact craters" on the 29% of the Earth's surface that is dry land, with several massive impact craters discovered so far in the 71% that makes up the ocean floors. It is now well established fact that when our planet encounters clouds and trails of cometary debris the upper atmosphere can become "dust-loaded", and the accumulating evidence that this has happenned many times in the past has given rise to a better understanding of the ancient cataclysms, and societal collapses that destroyed numerous ancient civilizations referred to by Plato and others, and which exist in the so-called 'mythologies' and 'oral traditions' of almost every culture around the world that has a reasonably long history.

There are many people, scientists often prominent among them, who now believe that our present civilizations is unsustainable, and that it is heading for a crash in the very near future. The advocates of these beliefs are many and varied. From fundamentalist christians and muslims to anti-globalisation activists and doom-laden environmentalists, the 'end-of-the-world' hysteria shows no sign of letting up, and if left unchecked could well lead to a breakdown of the social structures of all peoples in all countries during the early 21st century.

There is an increasingly paranoid 'movement' comprising many strange bedfellows surrounding the ancient Mayan Calendar, which predicts the end of some cosmic cycle on December 21st 2012, and a whole 'survivalist industry' had emerged to service this growing paranoia.

Meanwhile, in America, several million fundamentalist christians expect Jesus to return soon, shortly to be followed by a 'Great Tribulation', and a similar survivalist industry has grown up around the poor dabs whose sins are said to be so many that they will be 'left behind' when the faithful are taken up into heaven with the supposed 'Rapture'. Elsewhere, the president of Iran, in a recent address to the United Nations Assembly, has openly declared his belief that a shi'ite muslim version of 'Armageddon' is inevitable in the next 2 to 3 years.

As individuals, as families, and as groups of like-minded friends, how can we prepare for the inevitable urban disintegration that would result from such events initiating a breakdown of the social and economic structure should they ever happen? The answer isn't simply in becoming self-sufficient in fruit & veg, and indulging in a bit of backyard animal farming, although being 'knowledgeable' enough to accomplish this in a practical manner would, of course, be essential for the long term future.

What about the sheer chaos of the first few days and weeks immediately following a technological breakdown, an asteroid strike, a flu pandemic, or simply the impact on our way of life of the inevitability of the oil-wells running dry? There are many who say disasters are inevitable, and whether they are natural or man-made, we need to be prepared for them.

2010 Reality Check

The recent summit meeting in Copenhagen was NOT about so-called anthropogenic (man-made) global warming. It was simply about new ways to tax everyone in the whole world. The 'solutions' that were proposed by the leaders of all the countries that attended were desperate efforts to save their respective centralised energy grids. ONLY with centralised energy generation and distribution can consumers be taxed.

What those goverments don't want to see is a movement towards genuine self-sufficiency, where 'MICRO-GENERATION' replaces the centralised national grids. What they really fear is the fact that they simply cannot tax you if you don't consume the commodities that are centrally controlled - hence the CO2 scam and The Great Global Warming Swindle.

Now that the integrity of many of the IPCC Assessment Reports, and especially their 'Summary for Policymakers' documents are coming under independent scrutiny, the dishonest and unscientific manner in which these publications were compiled is becoming ever clearer. An example of this is the January 2010 revelation that the Himalayan glaciers overall are NOT MELTING, and will NOT BE GONE BY 2035.

Furthermore, the glaciers in the mountains of New Zealand have been expanding for a number of years, even during those years that the global warming disinformation networks were telling us were the warmest since records began - or some similar nonsense.

Some of the books and information sources on this page were compiled and written when the CO2 scam and the great global warming swindle were at their height and their disinformation networks were in full swing. This means that many of the authors were influenced by the climate change disinformation that the whole world has been bombarded with over the past few decades.

Nevertheless, the many and varied brilliantly practical ideas on how to become genuinely self-sufficient are still as valid now as they were before the "ClimateGate" scandal erupted in November 2009. Simply ignore the global warming stuff and get on with the job...

All 'survival experts' of whatever hue are agreed that being mentally prepepared for such eventualities can be as much as 90% of the answer. Being knowledgable about what to do when the proverbial hits the fan, can determine who survives the immediate chaos and who does not. Below are a small selection of books that offer practical down-to-earth advice on protecting your family, friends and property during just such civil emergencies that many feel will be inevitable should our civilization rapidly collapse around us - for whatever reason ...

"When Technology Fails (Revised & Expanded):
A Manual for Self-Reliance, Sustainability, and Surviving the Long Emergency"

"Matthew Stein has done us all a tremendous favor by searching far and wide for useful knowledge. In this era of specialization, personal and social viability depend on expansive thinking.

When Technology Fails is itself a powerful expression of the technology of sustainable living. It teaches more skills than I thought possible in just one book and rightly combines the immediacy of an emergency escape plan with the urgency for long-term thinking.

Technology is always failing while people stand around befuddled about what to do. With Mat Stein’s book, when push comes to shove, you can be your own veritable MacGyver.

Not only does it provide us with the information we need to plan for, and deal with, potential emergencies and disasters, it also shows us how we can live more sustainably and self-reliantly in today’s world of climate change and gas prices that are going through the ceiling.

We imagine that we live in the age of information, but this engrossing book reminds us of how comparatively little we know. Most human communities used to know how to provide water and food and energy for themselves, but most of the tips in this comprehensive account will come as news to most of us.

You may never need to put them into practice (or you may need them this winter when home heating prices soar) but at the very least they illuminate the state of our comparative ignorance."

"Disaster Survival: A Common Sense Guide to Catastrophe Preparedness"

"What will you do if you are unable to buy groceries or gasoline, or are unable to go to work or leave your home for a week? Two weeks? A month?

How will you obtain the goods you need to survive? Don't rely on others to provide for you and your family in a time of need.

If a natural disaster, personal crisis, or terrorist act disengages you from the mainstream for several weeks or months, you need to be prepared to survive on your own, with no help from the government or others, until the crisis has passed.

This book will guide you through the necessary steps you need to take to become self-sufficient for a short-term disaster situation.

It will also encourage you to add your own ideas to customize your plan of action to fit your own individual needs. You will end up with a vast knowledge that will separate you, the educated and prepared, from those who will only rely on others for their needs."

"The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the 21st Century" by James Howard Kunstler

Get This Book From:

The main argument of this book is compelling: that as we reach several tipping points (only one of which is peak oil), industrial civilisation will face major, possibly terminal, challenges.

Kunstler presents a number of "converging" catastrophes, whose simultaneous arrival makes them all the more challenging. Examples: peak oil; climate change; disease epidemics; falling water tables in major food production areas.

I find the author's exploration of how cheap fuel led to wasted water, helping create cities and mega-agricultural endeavors that reduced our water at the same time that we consumed centuries worth of unrenewable fossil fuel, quite alarming.

Since this resource is absolutely crucial to the functioning of all industrial societies (it is the basis of oil and natural gas, but also of fertilizers and pesticides, plastics and pharmaceuticals), this means that we are about to see “the end of the world as we know it”.

"Whether the reader intends to walk through the rain forest or merely contemplate doing so, McManners' effort is a treat.

Color photos and drawings clarify and embellish the text's points about where to look for drinking water in various wild locales, how to use invertebrates as food, etc.

What's more, and more entertaining, the British import is more international in scope than some similar American works. McManners considers survival not only in familiar outdoor environments but also in such extreme places as serious deserts and jungles.

The most important lesson seems to be putting plans into place before an emergency occurs so you wont have to think about what you are doing when the crunch comes and you are probably too frightened to think clearly."

"James Talmage Stevens's Making the Best of Basics, now in its 10th edition, is one of the best-known preparedness bibles around.

Stevens lays out a yearlong storage program of 15 food and nonfood categories, six of which (water, wheat and grains, dairy products, sweeteners, "cooking catalysts" like salt and oil, and sprouting seeds) are capable of sustaining life indefinitely in a no-frills diet.

The other 9 categories are designated "Building Blocks," and improve upon the basic diet and support a more routine, less Spartan existence while relying on stored supplies.

The book's main messages--store what you eat, eat what you store, use it or lose it--are at the core of its calm advice and simple, nutritious recipes. The 10th edition has been updated with a yellow pages section that lists current preparedness resources throughout the U.S. and Canada, including Web resources."

"The decline of cheap oil is inspiring increasing numbers of Americans to achieve some measure of backyard food self-sufficiency.

In hard times, the family can be greatly helped by growing a highly productive food garden, requiring little cash outlay or watering.

But, except for labor, these inputs depend on the price of oil. Prior to the 1970s, North American home food growing used more land with less labor, with wider plant spacing, with less or no irrigation, and all done with sharp hand tools.

But these sustainable systems have been largely forgotten.

Gardening When It Counts helps readers rediscover traditional low-input gardening methods to produce healthy food.

Designed for readers with no experience and applicable to most areas in the English-speaking world this book shows that any family with access to 3-5,000 sq. ft. of garden can halve their food costs."

"The 20th century saw unprecedented growth in population, food production and energy consumption.

As the population shifted from rural areas to urban cities, the human impact on the environment increased dramatically.

The 21st century has ushered in an era of decline in a number of crucial areas: global oil, natural gas and coal extraction; minerals and ores, such as copper and platinum; economic growth; yearly grain harvests; fresh water; climate stability; and, population.

To adapt to this profoundly different world, we must now begin to make radical changes to our attitudes, behaviours and expectations.

"Peak Everything" addresses many of the cultural, psychological and practical changes we will need to make as nature rapidly dictates our new limits. It indicates how we might make the transition from the Age of Excess to the Era of Modesty with grace and satisfaction."

"With an insightful global approach, Paul Roberts investigates the startling truth about the way we make, market, consume, and even think about food, and how this system is no longer compatible or safe for the billions of consumers that it was built to serve.

The emergence of large-scale and efficient food production changed forever our relationship with food and ultimately left a vulnerable and paradoxical system in place.

Over 1.1 billion people worldwide are 'over-nourished,' according to the World Health Organization, and are at risk of obesity-related illness, while roughly as many people are starving.

Meanwhile, the natural systems all food is dependent upon have been irreparably damaged by chemicals & destructive farming techniques.

Roberts presents clear, stark visions of the future and helps us identify the decisions both personal and global that we must make to survive the demise of food production as we know it."

"From start to finish, this book is both practical and inspirational.

He begins with a clear explanation of our energy predicament, and makes the novel claim that this is not a problem to solve - it is a situation that we must adapt to.

Cheap, abundant energy is slowly becoming a thing of the past, and we must make the best of what we have.

The author does an excellent job of disarming two common responses to Peak Oil by bringing their myths to the surface: the myth of progress and the myth of apocalypse.

Civilization does not collapse over night - it is better to recognize that it is a gradual stepping down that takes place over the course of a couple hundred years.

It is too late to expect a government solution to the problem, and only individuals and communities can take action now."

"In the waning days of the American Empire the US administration finds itself mired in political crisis; foreign policy has come under sharp criticism and the economy is in steep decline.

These trends mirror the experience of the Soviet Union in the 980s.

"Reinventing Collapse" examines the circumstances of the demise of the Soviet superpower and offers clear insights into how we might prepare for coming events.

Rather than focusing on doom and gloom, "Reinventing Collapse" suggests that there is room for optimism if we focus our efforts on personal and cultural transformation.

Orlov argues that by examining maladaptive parts of our common cultural baggage we can survive, thrive and discover more meaningful and fulfilling lives, despite the steadily deteriorating circumstances as we watch the oil running out."

This book not only covers personal safety, but also explores how the safety of children, seniors and the disabled can best be achieved in differing, and difficult circumstances.

As well as exploring physical problems, it also discusses the emotional reactions to a disaster, and how best to cope, fear management techniques, and how to treat someone suffering from shock."

"With the clarity, common sense, and directness you would expect from the SAS’s former Chief Survival Instructor, Lofty Wiseman shares the skills he’s perfected over a long career. Now he's compiled a complete guide to survival in the urban jungle.

Fire, electricity, water, gas, sharp knives, poisons, chemicals—these valuable tools can quickly become dangerous weapons when not treated with proper respect and understanding.

Add to these the risks of travel, terrorism, muggings, rape, and we are constantly reminded that the world is a dangerous place.

Wiseman shows readers how to think realistically and practically about these perils in order to avoid them, whether they are at home, on the street, in school, or in transit."

From self-defense techniques to home security systems to coping with natural disasters, this book will teach readers to recognize risks, make quick decisions, and live confidently in the modern urban world.

"This book is a reprint of a classic. The author describes tested methods for finding your way using natural signs rather than map and compass.

The methods covered range from the usual -- such as stars, the sun and trees -- to less common ones such as the routes of migratory sea birds or seasonal winds.

In this modern age where GPS positioning is the norm, one tends to think of the subject of navigation as being beyond the ordinary skills of the lay person. With artificial lighting and digital time keeping we can become very detached from the natural world.

This inexpensive book helps redress this imbalance and shows us how to rapidly find our bearings in a strange location.

I work full time researching and teaching the type of navigation that Gatty covers. It is recommended reading on all my courses."
